Second PNG Heads of Missions Conference

Connecting with a purpose is the theme of the Second PNG Heads of Missions conference opened by the Prime Minister today.

Foreign Affairs and Immigration Minister, Rimbink Pato, defined the theme simply as, connecting PNG to the world.

Heads of Missions present included Papua New Guinean woman high commissioners, Dame Winnie Kiap from the United Kingdom, former police and Defence commanders, amongst others.

Minister Pato told the conference that his ministry is working on policies that will establish trade and human development programs that Papua New Guineans can benefit from and advance their knowledge and skills.

The Prime Minister spoke with a different tone.

Mr. O’Neill said he understood that funding constraints has affected the work of foreign missions over the years.

He promised the heads that government will see to it that this issue is sorted out this year.

The Prime Minister did not mention any figures, however, said this concerned outstanding salaries and leave fares.

Mr. O’Neill urged the heads to come up with critical and practical solutions and programs that Papua New Guineans can benefit from.

He said it is high time that PNG move away from its comfort zone and compete with the world.

He told the heads of missions that upcoming international events such as the 2015 Pacific Leaders Summit and 2018 APEC meeting to be hosted in Port Moresby are avenues that must also be utilized to establishing and advancing political, social and trading relationships.
