Schools Charge Excessive Project Fees

Prime Minister Peter O'Neill has sent a strong warning to school boards againstthe charging of huge sums of project fees.

He says project fees should not be more than 200 kina.

Beards will be dismissed if found guilty.

MP Beb Dadae broughtthe issue of school boards charging excessive project fees.

 

He said in his electorate some schools were charging K800 for project fees. He asked Prime Minister Peter O'Neill to clarify wetherthe boards hadthe right to charge overthe minimum fee of K200. He went futher to say thatthe fees charged werethe same in most parts ofthe country and was almostthe same as paying for full school fees.

The Prime Ministersaid project fees are unneccsary especially withthe government allocating funding in a timely manner underthe free education policy. He says school boards will be penalized if found to be charging aboverthe K200 mark.

He also announced that a task force will be set-up to collect data from schools throughoutthe nation. He saidthe education department is inefficient and does not have basic information likethe number of students’attendingthe schools. One hundred thousand kina will be put aside to carry outthe under taking. Atthe same time, data for health will also be collected.
