The Mainohana Catholic Secondary School in Bereina, in the Kairuku-Hiri District of Central Province, is in dilemma, with safe drinking water running out in the school.
Speaking on behalf of the school’s head teacher, the school’s Deputy, Sr Antoinette Ake, said out of the eight water tanks in the school, only one has water.
The school caters for over 600 boarding students, and safe drinking water is running out fast.
“The boy’s dormitory tank is out of water, and they are using the teacher’s tank now,” Sr Ake said.
The school sits on a water-fill land, and they are now using bore water. But Sr Ake said students are not used to drinking bore water.
“Our students do not like bore water, so we are using it for washing and ablution purposes only,” she said.
Meanwhile, the water level at the Angabanga River has dropped drastically. What used to be flowing river, is now dry sand.
While the effects of the current dry weather are coming to surface in various parts of the weather, it is expected to get worse over the months.
