School Boys Rugby League in Alotau

by Elijah Lavett – EM TV Sports, Port Moresby

School Boys Rugby League is the first program of its kind to be rolled out in the Milne Bay Province.

It has been a slow start, but primary school children have shown their interest in the sport of Rugby League, and are keen on having competitions in the area.

School children were asked to pay registration fees before taking part in the competition.

The games kicked off two weeks ago with five schools having shown interest in the competition.

There will be two divisions in the School Rugby League competition – under 16 and under 18.

Games will be played at the Cameron High School for the time being as the proposed playing field will be undergoing changes.

Children at the Alice Wadega park were being taught basic skills on the sport and how it should be played.

“Hopefully the games will be brought back to the main central township of Alotau,” said Daroa Ben Moide, the instructor.
