Sports play an important role in the development of human resource in the country; increasingly significant in the rural settings of Papua New Guinea.
The Yagaria community in the Lufa District of the Eastern Highlands province is one, of the many rural communities, that sees sports as an important tool for the development of men and women, especially youths in the area.
The main focus is to keep the youth busy and away from drugs, illegal home brewed alcohol and other illicit activities.
Little is known about the Yagaria LLG in the Lufa District of Eastern Highlands Province, however, the people engage in sports during the festive period and on other special occasions.
Ten neighbouring communities, which include, Forapi Bafuti, Niroka Hanito, Hibu Henagaru, Kema Kamate, Fore, Kamano, Kami and Fogo came together in true community-spirit, setting aside any grievances’ that may have existed, to join in rugby touch, soccer and volleyball.
Host and a local from the area, Poli Ifina understands the importance of bringing the communities together; and anticipates having this sporting carnival to continue for the next five years.
The Yagaria LLG Sports are now looking to affiliate with the Goroka Sports Foundation and are seeking support from business houses and the national sports ministry.
