Lack of Road Planning in PNG

By Stanley Ove Jr – EM TV News, Port Moresby

A research has revealed that road management and funding are big problems for PNG.

The author of the research, Matthew Dornan, during the launch of the report yesterday said road conditions in the country have gone from bad to worse in the last 40 years.

Dornan said roads are a public service and if they are not maintained or built then the Government is not playing its part.

The paper revealed that lack of impact planning and funding are also contributing factors to the deteriorating state of roads throughout the country.

Dornan said this affects development, and service delivery.

The paper was released under a partnership program between the Australia National University (ANU) and the National Research Institute of Papua New Guinea (NRI).

Meanwhile, NRI Director, Dr Charles Yala, said there must be standards of planning and how roads are being built in PNG.

Yala said this will help in managing and funding road projects in the long run.
