Push for Special Task Force to be Re-established

The push to re-engage the Special Task Force on illegal immigrants has increased in the last two weeks.

Citizens have expressed anger on social media on the increase of foreigners and illegal immigrants.

While the government through Chief Secretary, Sir Manasupe Zurenuoc, says the government is considering the issue, the delay lies with the Chief Migration Officer, who is yet to present an overall performance report.

While the government is awaiting the report on the Special Immigration Task Force set up in 2012, the number of illegal immigrants and illegal activities has increased.

Following the arrest of three Chinese nationals for the attempted murder of a G4S Security Guard, another Filipino national was also arrested for using obscene language on a PNG citizen and appeared before the Boroko District Court where the case has been adjourned to 29 February this year.

Also in Lae, a businessman from Singapore was arrested by police for smuggling firearms into the country. The matter is before the courts.

The increased number of foreigners engaged in disreputable activities, and breaching PNG Laws, has prompted calls for the re-engagement of the Immigration Task Force. Oro Governor, Gary Juffa recently gave his support

In a recent interview with Chief Secretary to the Government, Sir Manasupe Zurenuoc, he said the government was considering re-engaging the Immigration Force

However, whether the government will re-engage the Immigration Task Force depends entirely on the report from the Chief Migration Officer, who is yet to give a formal report on the Special Task Force Operations set up in 2012.
