Public Accounts hears of massive flaws in Accounting

The Public Accounts CommitteeInquiry intothe Auditor General’s report for 2009 has revealed massive flaws inthe accounting and financial management systems.

The Committee was told thatthere were no proper checks and balances to account for the millions of kina.

The Committee also heard of lack of resources withinthe Auditor General’s Office.

The audit report was in four – parts first one featuredthe report ofthe Auditor General for the Financial Year 2009. Part Two and Three onthe AG’s Report intothe National Government Department Accounts and Records Public Transactions. This included Provincial Government’s LLG’s, Hospital Beards and Public Business arms and Subsidiary.

The Public Accounts Committee was told that apart from lack of cooperation by those being audited to provide evidence and lack of funding for Auditor General’s Office by line departments has interrupted processes.

The PAC has put to taskthe Auditor General to deal with senior officers or bureaucrats who refuse to cooperate withthe auditing process of Public Accounts.
