One school in the nation’s capital is aiming to achieve economic independence in the near future.
The Port Moresby National High School today opened its new conference centre, with the aim of generating income for the school.
The conference centre is the first major development at the school since it opened in 1996.
Port Moresby National High School is one of the newer national high schools in the country.
Opened in 1996, the school was a gift to PNG from the Japanese government.
Guests at today’s event included the Minister for Education, Nick Kuman, and the Ambassador of Japan, Moria Matsumoto.
Completed at a cost of K2 million, the convention centre was built from steel and concrete by contractor J4J Construction Ltd.
It is named after the current school principal, David Diowai, who said the purpose of the infrastructure is to generate income for the school, as well as provide them with a better teaching and learning facility.
The convention centre is open for business and will be managed by an appointed property and business manager, so that the schools administration can focus on the core functions of the school.
“The current school hall generates K180,000 annually for the school. The new convention centre is expected to bring in half a million kina annually in revenue,” Diowai said.
