Police Officer On The Run

By Theckla Gunga – EM TV News, Port Moresby

A senior police officer is on the run after allegedly smuggling betel nut into Port Moresby, using police resources.

The officer, attached to the Dog Unit fled the scene when he realised police investigators were tracking him.

Acting on a tip off, police officers attached to the Internal Investigation Unit travelled the Magi Highway last night to track down the suspect officer.

Information received at 7am this morning indicated that the suspect officer was escorting a 10-seater and was approaching the Erima roundabout. The suspect officer was driving a private vehicle and escorted the betel nut smuggler. Its vehicle registration is different from the plate number attached to the vehicle.

Upon identifying the vehicle, the investigators followed it into Morata but the officer fled the scene leaving behind 30 bags of betel nut and the vehicle owner.

It is understood the officer has been involved in smuggling betel nut into Port Moresby using his police uniform on numerous occasions and investigators were closely following him.

At this stage, police are yet to identify the owner of the vehicle.
