PNG Team Prep for U18 Oceania Basketball Championships

With only five weeks to the U18 Oceania Basketball Championships, the PNG under 18 Team is using the Taurama Aquatic Centre for their training, two days a week.

Chief Executive Officer for PNG Basketball Federation, Joel Khalu, says this will be the first regional tournament the team will attend for the first time, with the championship to be held in Suva, Fiji.

Khalu, said the PNG U18 men’s and women’s teams have been going through vigorous training in preparation for their first Oceania championship in Fiji.

He says, since the selection from the U18 national Championships in Port Moresby, the Federation has consistently improved, focusing on the development of junior player. Many of these players, who are already performing to a senior level, will find themselves next year’s PNG Games, representing their individual provinces.

He says, next year the U17 National Championships will be organised to get top players for next year’s Oceania Championships, adding that another point of interest next year for Basketball PNG is also getting the senior players back in to training for their international championships.

The PNG U17 will hold their national championships next year in order to make selections for the U17 Oceania Championships, and U15 Oceania Championships where PNG will play host, in 2018.
