PNG Golden Girl – Toea Wisil

by Julie Badui Owa – EM TV Online

The Pacific Sprint Queen and Papua New Guinea Golden Girl Toea Wisil has done it again, but this time around in her own backyard, winning Gold in the Women’s 100m Final at the 2015 Pacific Games

With a time of 11.6 seconds, Wisil blitzed the competition, with Fijians Younis Bese and Sisilia Seavula taking Silver and Bronze respectively behind PNG’s sprint dynamo. But perhaps this came as no surprise, with Wisil having being such a dominant force over the sprint distance in recent years.

Hailing from Banz in Jiwaka Province, and born on 1 January 1988, Wisil was nominated as her nation’s flag bearer at the 2012 Summer Olympics Opening Ceremony.  Wisil first began running with a local group from her village. From there she was selected to train in Brisbane, Australia, and has been hugely successful ever since.

Some of her distinguished endeavours on the track are five Gold Medals won at the 2011 Pacific Games in New Caledonia, winning the 100m, 200m, 400m, 4 x 100m relay and 4 x 400m relay.

In April 2013 Wisil became the first ever Papua New Guinean to hold an Australian national track title, when she claimed the 100m event in Sydney.

Wisil’s full-time dedication and commitment to her sport has seen her become one of the most recognisable female athletes in the Pacific region, which proves that regardless of certain situations in life, one can achieve greatness through hard work and dedication.

Keep watching EM TV, the lead broadcaster of the 2015 Pacific Games to see Toea Wisil and the rest of the PNG Team roaring towards even more Gold medals.
