By Jack Lapauve Jr, EMTV – Port Moresby

Prime Minister, Peter O’Neill, says PNG must reflect and chart its way to prosperity.

Mr O’Neill said despite challenges in climate change, high oil prices, and drought in the country, PNG can stand proud by learning from past experiences.

He made these statements during the 40th Independence flag raising ceremony this morning at the Independence Hill near Parliament House today.

In his opening address, the Prime Minister embraced the diversity of the cultures of PNG that has brought the nation together.

O’Neill said the forefathers of the nation have guided the nation since the declaration of Independence in 1975, and it is time now for this generation to lead and make history for PNG.

“This is a time of reflection on what we have achieved together. It is a time to look at how we can build an even stronger nation based on those achievements, and on the many blessings we enjoy today. Of course there have been difficulties over the last four decades – but these challenges have made us stronger’, O’Neill said.

Nearly 1,000 attended in this history making moment to mark 40 years of Papua New Guinea as an Independent country.
