Solwara 1 Project Must Benefit the People

New Ireland Governor, Sir Julius Chan, says the national government is holding on to wealth that rightfully belongs to the people of Papua New Guinea.

In an exclusive interview with EMTV yesterday, Governor Chan said he wants the people of West Coast Namatanai and East New Britain to benefit from Nautilus Minerals’ Solwara 1 Project.

He made these comments following the government’s intention of not identifying landowners, with the project occuring offshore.

An outstpoken Governor Chan said that the deep sea mining project cannot be fulfilled with the rightful owners being left out in the cold. He added that the national government has too much control over substantial benefits.

The Nautilus Solwara 1 Project is a first of its kind for underwater mining, with work and exploration happening on the surface of the sea floor.

Governor Chan, however, admitted that the New Ireland Provincial Administration had not initially approved the project, instead coming to a amended agreement with the developer.

With the country on the verge of celebrating 40 years of independence, the New Ireland Governor has again called for his province’s autonomy.

Governor Chan has always believed that the country will see and feel change, if the people complete control of their s.
