An international photographer says Papua New Guinea’s traditional culture has attracted and captured the hearts of many people overseas.
This is because of its' unique and rich diversity.
David Kirkland from Australia is an international photographer working for national tourism authorities around the world. He has been photographing Papua New Guinea for over twenty years.
Kirkland is a guest at the 5th Melanesian Festival of Arts and Culture for his photography exhibition, ‘Tribal Melanesia’, located at the National Museum and Art Gallery.
Melanesia, particularly Papua New Guinea, is one of the world’s last great frontiers in terms of traditional culture not found anywhere else in the world.
However, he pointed out, not enough is done to promote and protect these traditional cultural values.
Attention needs to be focused on many leadership levels, he said, to protect traditional culture.
National Cultural Commission Executive Director and Festival Chairman Dr. Jacob Simet thanked Kirkland for promoting PNG through photography.
Twenty-four photographs that capture people in traditional attires were displayed at the exhibition.
Among them are the two Huli wingmen that were captured near the Opera House in Sydney, Australia.
