Pacific communities face many challenges in accessing clean water supply.
In today’s discussion in the eighth Pacific Water Conference, water utilities in the region identified strategies to alleviate these issues.
Topics included water and gender, asset management, water and technology, and non-revenue water challenges and solutions.
This has been a problem faced by Water PNG and Eda Ranu over the years.
According to research presented in the sessions, a huge amount of water is wasted or lost before it reaches consumers.
On a brighter note, non-revenue water can be the number one source of income if water utilities have control and monitoring.
A working team is now putting recommendations for the ministerial meet on Thursday. This would be the first positive step taken by the Pacific Water and Waste Management Association to involve government ministers.
The call is for governments to adapt and to be more inclusive in eradicating obstacles faced by Pacific communities.
