Opposition Looming For A Vote Of No Confidence

By Quinton Alomp – EM TV News, Port Moresby

As the October Parliament session approaches, the Opposition says it is collecting numbers for a vote of no confidence against the leader of the ruling coalition.

Opposition leader, Don Polye, said they are intact and ready to move a motion against Prime Minister, Peter O’Neill.

But O’Neill has said in recent weeks that he is confident against any attempt at a vote of no confidence motion.

Despite this, Opposition leader is more confident this time that a motion will be moved when Parliament resumes on the 27th of this month.

In a media conference today, Don Polye, flanked by PNG Party leader, Belden Namah, Pangu Pati Leader, Sam Basil, Kikori MP, Mark Maipakai, the newly elected Goilala

MP, William Samb and Porgera Laiagam MP, Nixon Mangape said the time is right to change the Prime Minister.

They did not confirm how many MPs they have on their side. However, Polye said they have the numbers, claiming that they are in conversation with MP’s in government and the middle benchers.

“The Opposition is solid. As alternate government we are ready to move the motion of no confidence,” Polye said.

The Opposition points out four main reasons why they want the PM ousted.

The first reason they claimed is violation of constitutional processes, followed by poor checks and balances and the interference with state agencies to carry out their tasks independently.

The recession in the economy is the fourth reason.

They said the actions of the Prime Minister when facilitating the payment of two turbine generators from the LR Group of companies from Israel and the UBS loan deal last year undermines principles of good governance, check and balance.

Former Oppostion Leader, Belden Namah called on other MPs to support the move “for the good of the country.”

Deputy Opposition leader, Sam Basil said the nine MPs of Morobe, including Governor, Kelly Naru are in one spirit.

“We will stand for the good of the Morobe people,” he said.
