Four members of the Opposition called a news conference today to give their support to Kandep MP Don Polye as the new opposition leader.
The members included Departmenty Opposition leader Sam Basil who said it is in the best interest of the Opposition for the former Treasurer to lead. In a show of solidarity, Eastern Highlands Governor Julie Soso, Kikori MP Mark Maipakai and Departmenty Opposition leader Sam Basil joined Mr Polye to address rumours surrounding his appointment.
Departmenty Opposition leader and Member for Bulolo, Sam Basil welcomed Mr Polye as the new leader and called on other members of the Opposition team to work together and strengthen the Opposition bench.
“Rabaul MP Allan Marat and I will be assets to the Opposition team; we all will work together to fight for people’s rights in national issues,” Basil said.
In acceptance, Mr Polye said the Opposition plays a vital role in keeping the ruling government liable and responsible for good governance. He says he will continue the good work of Mr Namah.
Meanwhile, a spokesperson from Mr Namah’s office says the reshuffle is because of the number game and acknowledged that Polye is now the Opposition leader. The administration of the Opposition is an in-house issue between Mr Namah and Mr Polye.
Former leader Belden Namah was not at the conference today.
