One Dead, Three Wounded

One man is dead, a defence soldier wounded and two police officers injured following a car chase incident in Port Moresby last night.

The driver of the vehicle was shot by police and his off sider, the defence solider wounded in the chase.

It is understood the vehicle they were travelling in was identified as a stolen vehicle.

According to confirmed police reports, the driver was driving a vehicle identified on police radio last night as a stolen vehicle.

There was a car chase which lasted for 20 minutes from Waigani to Tokarara and later into Morata.

Gun shots were fired by police officers who killed the driver and injured the off sider, who is a defence officer.

“There was a call on police radio that the vehicle the police shot at was a stolen,” acting Metropolitan Superintendent Philip Kuluam said. 

This morning, there were minor confrontations between members of the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary and the PNG Defence Force.

A number of road blocks were set up in Waigani and Manu Auto-Port after the public damaged three police vehicles this morning.

A joint media conference between Police and Defence at 12 today saw both forces planning to take immediate actions on those involved.

However, when media personnel asked what actions or which investigators do the investigations, no officers’ names were disclosed. 

It is understood that the disciplinary heads will take appropriate actions against all officers involved. 

The confrontations today has again interrupted bus services for Port Moresby residents traveling out of Manu-Auto Port and disrupted the sales of vegetables sellers.

Business houses at Boroko and Four Mile closed business for the day at 10am.

Following a meeting between senior officers from the two disciplinary forces, a preliminary investigation team will be set up to further investigate this matter.
