Ombudsman Commission Stands Firm

by Merilyn Diau-Katam – EM TV News, Port Moresby

Acting Chief Ombudsman, Phoebe Sangetari, believes the state affairs is not as bright as it should be, brutality by law enforcement agencies have been rampant with extensive human rights abuse.

The Ombudsman Commission has seen government heads take advantage of their authority, over the years.

“We continue to grapple with the issues of corruption in high places, mal-administration and inefficiency in the public sector,” stated Sangetari.

Although there have been critics with the Ombudsman Commission’s operations, Ms Sangetari believes the Ombudsman Commission will continue to play its role as an independent body..

“It has and will continue to aspire to fulfil its constitutional mandate of promoting good governance and quality leadership as an oversight agent.

Its input into the community, in my view, is one of the reasons for a reasonable degree of good governance and quality leadership in the country today,” said Sangetari.
