New IRC Office in Lae

by Scott Waide – EM TV News, Lae

The Internal Revenue Commission has relocated its office to the centre of Lae City in a move geared towards improving government revenue collection and customer service.

Over 36 months, Lae City’s rapid development has spurred a series of adjustmen’s for both government agencies and private organisations.

Today, the Internal Revenue Commission opened a new office in the centre of town.

The aim is to improve customer service and improve on tax compliance.

The Morobe province is crucial for national government coffers.

Lae is an port city and has a constant inflow of people who come from the highlands to spend their money in the province.

Improving compliance, means the IRC can plug revenue leakages and secure government revenues.

For internal revenue, the Morobe provincial government has a 60/40 arrangement for GST collection. It was previously an issue of contention with the provincial government arguing it was not getting its share of GST.

With increased revenue, the Commission says provincial governmen’s should be taking an active role in ensuring that GST payers are registered and provincial government revenues increase.
