The National Capital District Commission has plans to expand Port Moresby to its boundaries.
NCDC is focusing on the 4 main gateways to the city to identify potential areas to create new suburbs and economic zones.
The current congestion in the city is one of the reasons for the expansion plan.
NCDC said in a statement that the expansion plan for the country’s capital city comes to encourage people to move out of the city limits.
The Commission believes that once its master plan is completed, overcrowding and the city’s growing traffic issues will be resolved.
NCDC yesterday signed a little over K400 million worth of infrastructure projects as part of its 2010 to 2020 road master plan.
They include:
– the 3km long 4-lane Taurama Bypass and link to Magi Highway worth over K100million.
– the 14km of 4-lane 6 Mile to Bautama road valued at over K150million.
– the 4.7km of 4-lane Koura Way (Tokarara – HB Bypass) worth over K80 million.
– the 5km of 2-lane Magani Cres (Gerehu – Parliament) valued at over K37 million.
– UPNG Dormitory worth over K16million.
NCD Governor Powes Parkop said in the statement that the Government guaranteed NCDC financial support of around K100 million per year as part of its major centers improvement.
But Mr Parkop says the spread of the K100 million per year over the next 5 to 6 years will have a very minimum impact.
So NCDC negotiated with financial institutions to explore opportunities for pledging the government’s yearly contribution for a lump sum loan.
After negotiations with all banks, a deal was finalized with BSP at 6.25%.
NCDC managed to get K375 million for the projects, and K125 million of buffer.
