Mt Tavurvur Eruption: Government Responds Swiftly

The government responded promptly today to the Mt Tavurvur eruptions in East New Britain, with the release of K1 million for evacuation work on the ground.

Prime Minister Peter O&rsquO’Neill announced this today in an exclusive interview with EM TV News.

 

Deputy Prime Minister, Leo Dion, left for Kokopo today after parliament adjourned to take charge of activities there.

 

Straight after parliament adjourned today, Prime Minister Peter O&rsquO’Neill told EM TV News that the government was on top of this issue and is in constant communication with people on the ground.

 

He thanked the people affected by the eruptions and the provincial and district administrations for working together and said the government stood ready to assist.

 

He further said that while the eruptions were quiet, with no immediate danger at this stage, officials were closely monitoring the situation.

 

He announced a K1 million funding to assist those affected with their evacuation needs.

 

Governor for East New Britain and Member for Kokopo, Ereman ToBaining Junior, who was in West New Britain yesterday for official engagements, is understood to have left for Kokopo today while the Deputy Prime Minister, Grand Chief Leo Dion, also travelled to Kokopo today. They will be on the ground to coordinate activities from there.

 

Prime Minister O&rsquO’Neill thanked them for taking a proactive approach in addressing the issues on hand.
