The MOU signed today is part of efforts spearheaded by Climate Change Development Authority to promote more environmentally-friendly power sources in PNG, at a time when renewable energy is seen as the favoured option for power generation into the future.
These efforts will also receive support from development partners. The UNDP in PNG is also a signatory to this agreement, which aims to promote the use of renewables.
In a country as geographically diverse as Papua New Guinea, access to energy, but more so clean energy, is being seen as a driver of positive development in communities throughout PNG.
As the state’s electricity generation and distribution entity, PNG Power’s Acting Managing Director, Carolyn Blacklock, says the push for renewable energy is not only environmentally friendly but also more economically viable – given that the costs of utilising renewables have gradually decreased in recent years.
