More Awareness on Cervical Cancer Needed in Bougainville, says Dr Vilosi

Obstetrician and Gynecologist, Joe Vilosi, from the Arawa Health Centre in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville, says more awareness is needed for young women to avoid risks of cervical cancer.

Lack of awareness by health workers in schools and communities has been identified as one of the driving factors and with the limited understanding, this poses a great high risk to young women.

Dr Vilosi made these comments in relation to increased cesarean cases of surgical operations performed at Arawa that has series complications on young women.

He said that lack of awareness by health workers, is a root cause. He added that ore awareness was needed, that targeted youth groups in schools and sports clubs, to avoid early teenage pregnancy.

Young women are getting married at an early age and this can be attributed to several factors.

The trend has now changed with the use of digital technology like mobile phones and the internet, especially social media sites like Facebook. 

As a result at the time of pregnancy, there’s poor attendance to antenatal clinic by young women that has series complications on young women.

Dr Vilosi said that although its individuals decision, there’s great need for proper control and monitoring.
