The Inter-city Cup Team, Mendi Muruks, is now secured financially for the 2017 season.
This was made possible by the generosity of the Petroleum Resources Kutubu and Mineral Resources Development Company with a half a million Kina sponsorship.
Since its formation 12 years ago, the team has been based in Lae due to the lack of sports infrastructure in their hometown, Mendi.
But in the last four years, things have taken a turn for the better.
With the help of some business houses, the team was relocated back to Mendi.
And in the last two years, with the vision of building a home base for the Muruks, the franchise was able to accommodate the team temporarily.
Now with the financial support from MRDC,and PRK, they will be able to build sound infrastructure and equip the Muruks.
While thanking the PRK AND MRDC for the sponsorship and continuous support, franchise Chairman Isaac Joseph said, this is a good foundation set for the Muruks.
Petroleum Resources Kutubu has been a major contributor to sports in the country, and to maintain this good will, they will be extending their financial support to the Gulf Isapea.
Both the Gulf and Southern Highlands provinces share a common interest with PNG’s Oil pipeline crossing over from Southern Highlands into Gulf.
PRK Director and next in line to Mendi Muruks’ current Chaiman, Mark Sakai said, the main vision now is to give as much support to the Mendi Muruks as possible and in the near future, do the same for the Isapeas.
He added other stake holders must chip in and assist sports, not only for the Mendi Muruks but for the nation as a whole.
Sakai reiterated that, all must contribute to tangible change and sports is one way of doing that, as it will benefit everyone in the long run, especially the youths.
