Mass Eviction In Lae

A mass eviction was conducted along the Lae’s Bumbu River yesterday.

More than 100 houses and makeshift homes were bulldozed leaving hundreds of families homeless.

The illegal settlers have been settling on the land belonging to the Polytechnic Institute for many years, and a court decision last Friday, has called for their immediate eviction.

The number of people seeking refuge after the eviction is expected to increase over the next few days.

Meanwhile, settlers living next to the Bumbu Police Barracks, were also given a 2 weeks’ notice, to vacate the state land or they will be removed by force.

The eviction also comes after numerous calls by local leaders calling on the provincial government, to removed illegal settlers following a steady increase in law and order problems in Lae city.
