Masiu: Radio Critical in Disseminating Public Awareness

The level in which broadcasting plays a critical role in the lead up toward Bougainville’s referendum was questioned in Parliament today.

South Bougainville MP, Timothy Masiu said as 2019 looms, broadcasting especially radio, is important in the dissemination of public information.

Moreover the awareness on the Bougainville Peace Agreement which is lacking.

Using the communication medium, radio is the most convenient way to channel information because Papua New Guinea’s population is challenged by its geographical setting.

South Bougainville MP, Timothy Masiu in the final question time of Parliament today said this is very important for the Autonomous Region’s 2019 referendum, where awareness is critical.

Majority of the Bougainvilleans especially youth sill lack fair knowledge about the Bougainville Peace Agreement.

He asked the National Communications Minister to give priority for Bougainville.

It was the first question to the Communications Minister, Sam Basil.

Basil clarified there were three radio stations operating in Autonomous Region of Bougainville, which are NBC Bougainville, New Dawn Radio and a mobile Radio Ples Lain focused on referendum awareness.

The National Communications Minister will travel to the Autonomous Region and meet the ABG, because the last meeting was unsuccessful.
