A man in Lae, Morobe Province, who beat and tortured his wife with a power cord has been rearrested after he was let off. The man in his 30’s was initially arrested by the police at the Omili substation and transferred to the Lae Central Police Station.

The reasons behind his release have not yet been established. But Omili police say he was set free a day before he was due to appear in court. This morning, when he turned up at the Omili Police Station to collect his identification cards and other personal effects from the arresting officer, he was rearrested.

The Lae Sexual Offences Squad was called in this morning to take the man into custody. Police say he beat his wife following an argument. Pictures taken by police showed severe bruising and cuts to the woman’s face, arms, midsection and the legs. When questioned by police, the man reportedly said in Tok Pisin “I was teaching her a lesson”.
