Students Suffer at UNRE Oro Campus

by Mickey Kavera – EM TV, Popondetta

In recent months, students from higher learning institutions in the country have voiced their concerns over poor facilities.

This time, students at the University of Natural Resources and Environment Oro Campus, are expressing the same.

Their plight is similar to their follow colleague students from other institutions. There ablution blocks and dormitories are all run down. The students described their lives on campus as a “survival of the fittest”.

You don’t have to look far to know the reasons why they say this. The writings are on the walls.

They have no choice but to shower outside, and to use toilet facilities that are not fit for humans.

Their academic performance is also being affected with no access to updated resources.

Even the librarian admits to this.

All these problems reflect the lack of funding received by the university.

Since becoming part of the University of Natural Resources and Environment in 2001, the Oro Campus has struggled to maintain its facilities.

The NEC recently announced for it to become the Eastern Papua University, but this is far from reality given its current dilemmas.

This University was once the pride of Papua New Guinea and the Northern Province.

And only time will tell, when it will regain that status.
