Chairman of Morobe’s Provincial Business Arm, Chris Gaya, has raised concerns about new buildings being constructed in residential areas of the city.
Gaya said that many buildings being erected in residential zones are unsafe.
He questioned if the provincial physical planning board was aware of this new trend.
Gaya pointed out that two buildings currently under construction in two different locations in the city, are questionable in their structure, and asked why the buildings were allowed to be built in these locations.
One of the buildings under construction is at Salamanda, and the other at Admin Compound. Both have been built in residential areas.
Heta Corporation Management, which owns the property at Salamanda, says the building will be used to house staff or will be put out to rent.
They said most of their houses are built using steel to avoid fire, a problem too often seen throughout Lae.
The owner of the construction currently underway at Admin Compound is out of the country and is expected to return next Tuesday.
A number of buildings constructed in the city are located in residential areas.
Gaya is calling on the Provincial Physical Planning Board to find out why commercial buildings are built in residential zones.
