Lae’s First Female Deputy Lord Mayor

Lae’s New Deputy Lord Mayor, Carol Yawing says she hopes to continue her work as a campaigner against gender based violence.

 

Carol Yawing is a member ofWomen ArisePNG. She is into her first week in office after becomingthe first women to become Lae’s deputy lord mayor.

Carol Yawing was one of two women candidates inthe race against a band of male contenders duringthe LLG election.

 

She is a mther of two and a long-time resident of Lae city. She was appointment by Tutumang members last Friday asthe new Deputy Lord Mayor.

 

 Carol Yawing says potential in quality lLeadersip isthe mattersthe most.

 

“The council has seen potential in quality lLeadersip in me,” she said.
 

Ms Yawing says she has inthe past supported NGO’s and organizations to fight issues such as Violence Against Womenin Papua New Guinea

 

The country has seen an increase in sexual and physical violence especially inthe rural areas and a Rise in HIV cases in Morobe Province.

 

Now that she is Deputy Lord Mayor, she will look more intothese issues in a broader perspective

 

Deputy Mayor Carol Yawing says she is now looking at improving data collection to establishthe number of people in her ward in order to deliver services.
