Lae Police apprehend suspects

Lae Police have shot and killed a suspect while two of his accomplices are nursing gun shot wounds to the leg at the Accidents and Emergency unit of Angau hospital.

Police believe they are members of an organized gang that have been carrying out robberies in the city.

Lae Metropolitan Commander, Chief Superintendent, Anthony Wagambie, says on Saturday night police received information of a number of armed suspects in West Taraka and engaged them on foot.

Four armed suspects were on Gantom street in the West Taraka settlement when they were approached by police.

The suspects upon recognising the police officers, fired two shots from a factory made pistol at police.

Police immediately returned fire and  shot the armed man , killing him instantly. A factory made pistol and five rounds were recovered.

The fourth suspect who was with them escaped with a factory made pistol grip shotgun.

Commander Wagambie, is calling on the fourth suspect to surrender to police.

On  the same night, police caught another suspect, Junior Panta, involved in a string of robberies.

He was named by the 57-year-old HR manager who was also allegedly involved in the Lae International Hotel robbery two months ago.

The suspect is remanded by police.
