The New–Britain highway between East and West New Britain will need additional funding to upgrade the road to suitable condition.
The East New Britain Department of Works revealed that K20 million allocated via the 2016 national budget is not enough.
NGI Regional Works Manager, Gilbert Kapi, says the K20m will most likely be used as ‘back payouts’ for accumulated outstanding payments owed to contractors over the years.
Kapi said four new bridges will be constructed and they needed an amount more than the allocated budget.
He said the Department of Works have planned to downsize their work to cater to the allocated money, which may cause a delay to the completion of the highway.
