At least one MP has reacted tothe rape of a nurse in Lae.
Expressing total frustration, Oro Governor Garry Juffa has moverd swiftly to prevent similar cases in his province.
Mr Juffa announced half a million kina for the creation of a family and sexual violence desk with Oro Police.
Mr Juffa saidthe country cannot just be quiet overthe Lae case, wherethe vulnerable always suffer.
Governor Juffa said government needs to review penalties for rape crimes inthe country.
Referring to Lae’s rape incidentohe said all members of parliament particularlythe governors should set up family and sexual violence units to deter such crime.
He said women and girls need to be protected in our communities. The governor has initiated a family and sexual violence desk in his province. Five hundred thousand will be allocated on a yearly basis to operate this desk.
He saidthe provincial government and volunteers are working in collaboration withthe local police to address this issue inthe Nothern Province.
The provincial government has agreed for a sum of two million kina to be allocated to addressthe law and order issue in this year’s budget.
Mr. Juffa said all lLeadersmust rise now and act. He saidthe high crime rates need to address immediately.
