Japanese Embassy Delivers Grants to Schools and a Resource Centre in PNG

The Japanese Embassy in Port Moresby has donated over K800 million for the construction of new classrooms, and a resource centre in Papua New Guinea.

Recipients of the grants signed the instruments today in Port Moresby, witnessed by Japanese Ambassador, Morio Matsumoto.

The recipients include Warabung Primary School, in East Sepik Province; Laiagam Elementary School, in Enga Province; Ugu Primary School, in Hela Province; and the Foundation for Rural Development in Jiwaka.

His Excellency Mario Matsumoto, Ambassador of Japan to Papua New Guinea, signed the documents, witnessed by representatives from these organisations at the embassy in Port Moresby.

“I believe that the signing of the contracts for Warabung Primary School in East Sepik Province, Laiagam Elementary School in Enga Province, Ugu Primary School in Hela Province will help with classroom facilities and provide more space to accommodate students,” Matsumoto said.

In addition, for gender empowerment, the instrument signing for Jiwaka Resource Centre is to further enhance this NGOs role in the community by facility life skills training for women.

“Training such as starting up a small business is essential to give economic stability for their families and improving their livelihoods,” he added.

This year the Japanese Government has extended a total amount of US$265, 845, over PGK842,000.

Mr Matsumoto says the Government of Japan sees Education as a priority area for human resource development.

The assistance was part of the Japanese Embassy Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security projects called GGP which comes annually.

GGP targets to empower people through the improved education and life skills through infrastructure development enshrine in vision 2015.

So far 279 projects have been funded under this program.
