The Independent Consumer & Competition Commission held a media conference today to clarify their role in the telecommunications industry, particularly amidst public controversy over unknown voicemail charges by the prominent mobile phone company, Digicel.
The ICCC’s response comes after Bulolo MP Sam Basil, took to social media and television, complaining about mobile phone company, Digicel’s unknown charges, before calling on the ICCC to investigate the telecommunications giant.
ICCC Commissioner and CEO, Paulus Ain, stated that since 2009 all ITC regulatory issues were governed by the National Information & Communications Technology Authority of Papua New Guinea (NICTA); urging consumers to take all queries and complaints to NICTA.
ICCC’s Executive Manager of Consumer Protection Division, Avi Hubert, added the importance of companies & businesses not taking advantage of consumers especially when a majority of them lived in rural areas and aren’t as smart phone savvy as those in the cities.
