Hiri LLG to get Water Supply

Water PNG signed a Memorandum of Agreement with the Central Government and the Hiri LLG to develop a water supply system for LNG-impacted villages in the Central Province.

The agreement states that the Central Provincial Government would fund the project which will be implemented in the Hiri LLG by Water PNG.

The MOU was signed by the Chief Executive and Managing Director Raka Taviri, Central Governor Kila Haoda and Hiri LLG Presdient Haoda Rogea.

Taviri, said the project will cost an estimated K5 million, taking into account the water plant’s designing, construction and commissioning.

The Hiri LLG Water Supply is in fact the third of its kind following Kwikila and Beraina. But landowner issues posed major set-backs to the operations.

“In our experience, the success of the project will rely on the leadership and support of the MPs and landowners”

Rogea however assured that Hiri landowners are aware of the urgent need for clean water supply and have pledged to cooperate.

He said the project would alleviate waterborne diseases that have posed a major health problem for Hiri Villages.

The water supply implementation project will be implemented in two phases.

Phase one will involve construction of pipe portable water, storage and bulk meters and upgrade of current raw water intake and pumps.

Work will begin in a month’s time.
