Health Services Breakdown In Kainantu

The absence of good health services in rural communities in the Kainantu and Obura-Wonenara districts has seen influx of patients into the Kainantu district hospital.

The hospital’s management says, staff shortages are among other major problems currently faced by the hospital.

Meanwhile, the people have also called for better health services be delivered at the community level.

High mortality rates of mothers dying while trying to give birth has been one of the many cases as a result of poor health services in rural Kainantu district.

The absence of trained community health workers and inaccessibility to roads and infrastructures has been the major setbacks for rural villagers.

This has seen the Kainantu district hospital getting the backlog of sick people.

Kainantu district hospital was established in the late 1950’s, and over the years, little has been done to improve the facility.

The hospital serves as a referral centre for a population of over 150, 000 people from Kainantu including the fringes of Obura-wonenara, Henganofi and Okapa districts.

The increased number of patients going to the hospital has posed an ongoing problem with inadequate nursing officers and support staffs in technical areas like laboratory, dispensary, and dentistry.

Like any other district hospitals around the country, the hospital has received little assistance.

The Kainantu district administration however, has called for counter funding from the four districts to assist in increasing capacity at the hospital.

While the blame game continues, the people have called for the responsible authorities to fund alternative avenues to bring basic health services into the rural communities.
