Chairman of National Disaster Committee, Dickson Guina, says the government has taken control of the current El Nino faced by the country.
However, Mr. Guina urged all Provincial Disaster Office to mobilise all Disaster Committees to submit disaster reports.
He said relief supplies will only reach those affected if the National Office receives reports from the Provincial Disaster Office.
He said so far only four provinces have submitted disaster reports, including Western Highlands, Enga, Simbu and the Central Province.
“The three arms of government all have a responsibility during this crucial time, all must work for the people,” said the Chairman.
Mr.Guina said the Committee is talking to donor agencies, including development partners, to get assistance for their relief efforts. They are looking at asking the Australian Government for some form of assistance as well.
Current assistance given, in terms of food rationing, has already been carried out for areas affected in the Highlands region including Tambul,Kandep, Mendi and Illaibu .
Simbu has also received some food supplies
The National Disaster Committee will co-ordinate all relief efforts with the first K5 million and the recently approved K25 million made available by the National Government.
