It was a spectacular night at the official opening of the 12th Festival of Pacific Arts in Guam as the event united the Pacific Island countries including Australia, New Zealand and Taiwan.

The Festival Village at Paseo was packed, and also included tourists who flew from other countries like Japan to witness and be part of this two week event.

Papua New Guinea’s artifacts caught the attention of other Pacific islanders who were interested to learn about the painting’s, wooden bowls and bow and arrows.

These were the gifts that were presented to the Governor for Guam, Eddie Baza Calvo.

Governor Calvo thanked all participating countries, for accepting the invitation for the 12th Festival of Pacific Arts.

Speaking at the official opening, Governor Calvo said that events such as the Festival of Pacific Arts, strengthen the historical and cultural bond, to foster knowledge for future generations.

While some countries like Guam are slowly losing their cultural identity because of modernisation, it’s important as it tells the story of the importance and significance of upholding all cultures and traditions.

Head of the PNG delegation, Dr Jacob Simet, said the participation of the Pacific Island countries will help with the preservation of the cultures and traditions.

“Our participation contributes to help with the preservation and promotion of our cultures in the Pacific,” he said.

The Festival of Pacific Arts offers more opportunities for Pacific Islanders to learn, share and protect their indigenous identity.
