Groundwork for 7th PNG Games Underway

Kimbe town is transforming, slowly but surely, with the current infrastructural developments underway for the seventh PNG Games.

With just nine months remaining until the games, the Host Organising Committee in Kimbe town are depending on contractors to carry out all infrastructural developments in time for a successful PNG Games.

Operations Manager, Freddie Matthies, said “we’ve discussed with our contractors, so we want our venues to be complete by September, as it gives us two months to touch up on final things and look at other preparations as well.

“Our main focus at this point in time is infrastructure. Nine months out, obviously there are concerns of whether the games will be hosted on time. I think nine months is enough time for us to push forward with the games.”

Faced with logistical challenges, this year’s games may not include all sports, Matthies says. The Host Organising Committee is currently set on 24 sports, including four para-sports.

“With the venues we have, we don’t have certain facilities to host games like swimming, and we get to choose sports we can and can’t do,” Matthies said.

He added that their biggest challenge will be in regards to transport.

“We need these four satellite venues, so we can push through the games in the two week period.”
