Government warns public of Bomana Escapees

Government has issued a warning tothe general public in Port Moresby and Central Province particularly women to be careful in light ofthe Bemana escape on Tuesday.

Correctional Services Minister Jim Simitab issuedthe warning in Parliament when answering questions by Chimbu Governor Noah Kool and Sumkar MP Ken Fairwether on this matter.

This wasthe second question in yesterday’s morning’s parliament sitting.

The Chimbu Governor describedthe escape of convicted bank robber WilliamKapris and two thers as a national crisis.

The Correctional Services Minister was asked to inform parliament onthe latest.

The minister said about one hundred prisoners escaped froPNG’s three high security prisons in just three months; Beon inthe Madang Province in March, Beimo in Morobe Province in May and Bemana inthe nation’s capital this month.

He said this is history in making adding it is a national crisis.

The minister said he received reports that prison officers were involved in aidingthe escape of convicted Bank robber WilliamKapris, Raphael Walimini and Michael Warangu.

Sumkar MP Ken Fairwether (pictured) expressed disgustoquestioningthe minister if any ofthese officers have been identiflied.

Mr. Fairwether called onthe minister to investigate thoroughly and prosecute prison officers involved in past prison breakouts as well.

Sadly,the minister indicated thatthere have been no prosecutions to date. The minister said police checks have been set up inthe nation’s capital andthe central province.

He urgedthe general public particularly women and youths to be careful when moving aroundthese places.
