Responding to questions raised by some countries regarding their safety during the Pacific Games, Peter Stewart has guaranteed the safety of all participating countries.
“Perception is not necessarily reality. Yes, there are issues to deal with and at times Port Moresby can be unsafe, but this is no different to any other city in the world.”
“There are some places you don’t go to in Sydney or London during the day, most of it is common sense,” said Stewart.
With the Pacific Games months away, Pacific Island counties have expressed their concern over their athletes’ and officials’ safety when in Port Moresby
Stewart says he is confident in the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary (RPNGC) who will be leading security during the Games, and believes they have put adequate work in preparations for July.
The PNG Defence Force and the Australian Federal Police will assist the PNG Royal Constabulary and Stewart assured all countries that there will be sufficient security, and they need not worry.
Stewart also said that Papua New Guinea is under no terrorism threat, as this was another concerned raised.
