Nothern Province Governor Gary Juffa has raised concern about land grabbing in Papua New Guinea

 

He called onthe national government to seriously consider an overhaul ofthe lands department to make it more effective to deal with this issue.

Governor is a member ofthe Public Accounts Committee that recently grilledthe lands department on illegal land deals.

 

Illegal land grabbing in Papua New Guineais a growing concern for many landowners and worrlied Papua New Guineas.

 

The Special Agriculture Business Leases or SABe is an example, which has seen rights to five million hectares of customary land given to foreign companies. The SABe report is yet to be published.

 

All this has been blamed onthe inefficiency oftheLands Department to monitor land deals.

 

Nothern Province Governor Gary Juffa has been critical ofthe functions ofthe lands department inthe recent Public Accounts Committee hearings.

 

He said,the department has no enforcement capacity and has no mechanism in place to prevent landtheftoprosecution or recovery of land, whther traditional or government-owned.

 

An overhaul ofthe department is crucial to effectively protect land being squandered, he said.

The Oro Provincial Government is also inthe final stages of establishing a business arm for the Nothern Province to represent landowners andthe province in all business activities.
