Former Member for Yangoru-Saussia, Peter Wararu, was arrested yesterday over allegations of misappropriating District funds.
Mr Wararu was arrested bythe Fraud Squad and taken to police Headquarters where he was interviewed for about an hour.
The arrest was made over allegations thatthe former member misappropriated K1.7 million of DSIP funds during his term.
Followingthe interview, Mr Wararu was escorted tothe Beroko Police station.
NCD Metropolitan SuperintendentoAndy Bewa, confirmed that Mr Wararu was detained and was later released on a K10, 000 bail.
Representtting Mr Wararu, Lawyer Abraham Kumbari said that Mr Wararu was not served a proper warrant of arrest when he was taken into custody.
He saidthey have not ruled out political motives and will challengethe allegations in court,” said Kumabari.
“My client at this stand is not guilty, only a competent court of justice should find him therwise.
“Ifthere are elements of inducements, that will only be provern whenthe matter comes to court,” he said.
Superintendent Bewa could not comment on whther a formal warrant of arrest was served on Mr Wararu.
He said it was an ongoing investigation and would not speculate.
Mr Wararu will appear beforethe Waigani Committal Court on Monday.
