As the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary celebrates its 128th year, up until now there has never been a female who has played the role of parade host.
But for Bougainville, history was created with the first policewoman to host a parade.
Assistant Commissioner of Police and Deputy Chief of the Bougainville Police Service, Joanne Clarkson, led her team during celebrations in Buka on June 15.
This has set the benchmark for female officers around the country.
Other woman in attendance were Senior Constable Joyce Tseraha, as the escort for the parade host, Senior Constable Florence Nohu as the driver, door openers were Lucy Kasia and Rebecca Kene while Sheena Cook was the Squad Commander.
Vice President of the Autonomous Bougainville Government, Patrick Nisira, was the guest of honour at the parade.
“Joanne Clarkson, I would like to give this honour to you, as the parade host. For a woman, this sets the precedence for all police women,” said Nisira.
Clarkson in response said “to host the parade was an honour and this empowers women to rise up in their duties.
“Yes, Bougainville has set the benchmark, which raises the profile of women. I chose all females to be in the team in this 11th ABG Day in Bougainville and it’s a deliberate move,” she said.
Senior Constable Florence Nohu was proud.
“To me it was very special as the driver,” said Nohu.
