The International Organisation of Migration Coordinator, Sithole Wonesai, said disaster risk management training is essential to educate people, and allow them to manage migration issues caused by disasters in the country.
Mr. Wonesai said this during a workshop conducted by the International Organisation of Migration in Port Moresby today.
“Disaster management risks training is important to manage migration issues that are caused by natural disasters,” he said.
PNG is vulnerable to natural disasters and hazards that pose controversial risks upon the lives of the people.
“In those areas affected by the natural disasters many people have forced to migrate out of their home lands,” he said.
He added that these immigrants displaced in foreign lands tend to face humanitarian issues and tribal conflicts that deprive their human rights.
The IOM compliments the PNG Government’s effort in managing disaster affected communities through carrying out disaster risk management training to be resilient to hazards and effects of natural disasters.
The International Organisation Migration is operational in 12 provinces, especially those induced by natural disasters and conflicts.
Meanwhile, 22 disaster coordinators from PNG and Vanuatu received their certificates today after attending a weeklong disaster and risks management workshop in Port Moresby.
