Twenty detainees from the Autonomous Region of Bougainville detained at Kerevat Jail in East New Britain Province, have been visited by their families.
Detainees were able to speak with their loved ones, for the third time, since the program was rolled out in 2013 that ensures detainees have close contact with their families.
The visit was made possible through the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), as part of its humanitarian mandate, to visit persons deprived of their freedom, to be treated humanely and with dignity.
ICRC with the support of PNG Red Cross and the East New Britain Provincial Government made it possible for this to happen.
The organisation of this event was done, to ensure families had the chance and opportunity to visit their loved ones.
ICRC also has close dialogue with the detaining authority, for them to listen to detainee’s challenges in prisons.
