Education Department Rolls Out Standard Based Curriculum

by Theckla Gunga – EM TV News, Port Moresby

The education department in Papua New Guinea is slowly coming away from the Outcome Based Education system it started using in 2011.

It rolled out its Standard Based Curriculum (SBC) in Port Moresby today in conjunction with SBC Training for elementary teachers.

The roll out will see over 16,000 elementary teachers in PNG undergo the training before they actually use the SBC in classrooms.

Starting with elementary teachers, primary and secondary teachers will also undergo the training.

Beginning with Port Moresby, Central and Gulf provinces will be the next provinces to take on the training.

Implementers say the change comes with the increase in the number of students going to school.

Outcome Based Education is a foreign concept, however after it was trialed in PNG, it received a lot of criticism which led to the reintroduction of SBC.

Meanwhile, the Education Department is working on a policy that will make education compulsory for all children in Papua New Guinea.
